The Galapagos Islands, Day 3

In the morning on Day 3 we visit Tagus Cove on Isabela Island and are once again greeted by a friendly sea lion.

The site provides spectacular views of our anchorage in the bay, as well as Darwin and Wolf Volcanoes.

The Galapagos Penguin is endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It is the only penguin that lives north of the equator in the wild and can survive due to the cool temperatures resulting from the Humboldt Current and cool waters from great depths.

A handsome Blue-Footed Booby poses for us.

In the afternoon we visit Fernandina Island, home to La Cumbre volcano, which erupts frequently. We also visit Punta Espinosa, a narrow spit of land, where a number of unique species, such as marine iguanas, sea lions, flightless cormorants, herons, egrets and Galapagos hawks can be seen in close proximity.

Onto the “panga” for another hike in search of more wildlife.

Brightly coloured Sally Lightfoot Crabs.

We hike across interesting shapes of hardened lava flow.

Thousands of Marine Iguanas piled up everywhere. We have to be constantly aware not to step on any.

Some head-butting action to show who’s boss and who gets the cute girl.

A sea turtle pops up for air.

Lunch time for a baby sea lion.

Sea lions frolic in the water as marine iguanas sunbathe.

The Grace waits for us in the distance.

The beautiful turquoise eyes of the Flightless Cormorant.

We spot a Galapagos Hawk that has caught a baby iguana. He devours the whole thing including it’s long tail which he struggles to swallow, but after several attempts his tenacity wins.

Large cracks in the rock.

Our guide, Alex, explains the remains of a whale skeleton.

After all that excitement we are ready to head back to the boat for the sunset, happy hour and a big dinner.
